The start of the story
Beyond the forest flowed a narrow stream. It babbled happily between the pebbles, and yellow marsh marigolds bloomed along its banks. Rusty the fox, Spike the hedgehog and Toby the bear were there, collecting colorful pebbles. Spike found a pink one, smooth as a piece of candy, and Toby found one as round as an apple. Suddenly Toby stopped and pricked up his ears. “Do you hear that? Someone is sighing.” Under a burdock leaf, right by the water, sat a little snail, gazing sadly at the other bank.
