The start of the story

Rusty the fox sat by the round window of his den, looking out at the evening forest. The forest wasn’t dark at all. Greenish mushrooms glowed by the stream, a lamp was lit in the squirrel’s hollow, and fireflies circled over the meadow. Highest of all, at the very top of Tall Pine, shone a tiny golden lantern. Mom said that a lamplighter lived up there, who put out the lights all over the forest every evening. When his lantern went out, last of all, the forest fell asleep. But tonight the lantern was flickering unevenly, as if it, too, were very tired.
